French Community Celebrates National Day in Ghana

The French community in Ghana on Tuesday July 14, 2015 celebrated its National Day in a well-attended reception held at the residence of France’s Ambassador to Ghana, H. E. Frederic Clavier. The celebration commemorated the liberation of “La Bastille” in 1789.

The event was opened with a proposal of toast from the French Ambassador to Ghana. In his speech, H. E. Frederic Clavier paid homage to the great French-Ghanaian partnership over the years and pledged his country’s continuous support to Ghana in all sectors of national development.

The Minister of Defence, Hon. Benjamin Kumbour, representing the President of Ghana, responded to the toast from the French Ambassador. He also recounted some laudable partnership moments between the two countries and called for better days in the future. Click for images from reception

As part of activities marking the celebration in Ghana, a fashion show dubbed “Revolutionary Fashion,” was put together by Institut Francais of Ghana with the assistance of Bee Arthur of B’ExotiQ. The occasion, which celebrates the French national values of “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity” was graced with the presence the French community in Ghana, a government delegation and many well-wishers.

The castle “La Bastille” was a prison where opponents to the monarchy were jailed without any fair judgment. The liberation of the prisoners and the destruction of “La Bastille” are known as “the French Revolution”.
