Wodiru |
Healthy living has been one of the stories preached
in every aspect of our lives. Mostly the story ends with recommendation of what
to eat and what not to introduce into your system. It is hardly about how to
prepare what is best for the body and this is just what Hash Plus, a team of
young graduates from the University of Ghana, decided to do with the
development of Wodiru ( means food in
Kaseem, the language of the Kasena people found in Navrongo), a cook book App.
An application built to be highly user friendly with its
simplified design, procedure and language, highlights recipes from all corners
of the country; from chief foods to snacks and drinks. Wodiru hosts over 70
recipes currently, comes in local and standard units and has an impressive
dietary pattern.
The Drive behind Wodiru’s Development
Some meals on Wodiru |
"Our purpose for developing Wodiru, which runs on
Android OS, are in excess. The most pressing need for the development of this
application was as result of Ghanaians lacking local recipes in their meal
planners and increase in taste for foreign foods. A situation encountered
mainly because of lack of a curricula in our educational system that seeks to
teach the new generation how to prepare Ghanaian local dishes.
We aim at salvaging what is left of our meals and prioritize
it among our people to appreciate our rich cultural recipes.
Our eating habit has been infiltrated with a lot of junk
foods, causing health issues. Hash Plus, developers of the mobile application,
deemed it important to have this cookbook available to all Ghanaians, both home
and abroad, as a way of enticing them to go back for their indigenous meals
which are rich in food nutrients."
Structure of Wodiru
Food pool
The food pool section of Wodiru highlights the main course
of foods prepared in Ghana as well as snacks and drinks.
The features |
Measurement
Hash Plus added a local measurement system to the
application to make it simple for all user to get the recipes in the right
quantities. The feature uses local quantifiable measurements such as look,
margarine tin etc.
Dietary patterns
This section also highlights the various eating patterns of
Ghanaians according to their geographical location as well as similar foods the
various ethnic groups prepare. It also explains why we eat certain foods at
certain time of the year. Amongst the reasons that have been identified on the
app are, seasons and bounty harvests. The Dietary patterns also proposes to the
user where to get local dishes and healthy eating habits one should look out
for.
All this was done to make a complete eating system that is
exhibited by Ghanaians. To expates who have plans of visiting Ghana, get informed on what you will be served on the dining table through Wodiru.
With a futuristic aim of adding more recipes from all
corners of Ghana, features that can estimate meal preparation time, ability to
share recipes via social platforms, a calorie calculator and an improved user
interface to be characterized by a national image, Wodiru is set to become one
of the most innovative use of technology to preserve the way of life of
Ghanaians. The generation unborn will surely be proud of this creation.
