At a fun filled event held at the forecourt of Accra Mall, Airtel
Ghana launched its new product, #FreeFacebook on Airtel. The new product allows
Airtel users free access to Facebook and some web pages. The well-attended
event witnessed a couple of performances and the audience receiving a lot of giveaways.
In a televised message, Madam Lucy Quist, the MD of Airtel Ghana,
exhibited a lot excitement at the launch of the new product. She said that Facebook
is the most visited site in Ghana and number one place for business people
thus, the reason for the company being proud to offer Facebook at no fee to its
customers. She also informed the public that aside free Facebook, Airtel was
also offering other web pages that hold a lot of information to the public for
free.
Madam Quist encouraged the public to grab Airtel sim cards
so as to enjoy the experience the company was offering.
In a post on his page, Mark Zuckerberg, inventor of Facebook
posted, “Today we're launching Internet.org in Ghana, giving people on the
Airtel network access to free basic internet services for education, health,
jobs and communication.
Right now only about 12% of people in Ghana are connected to
the internet, but connectivity is already improving people's lives and
communities.
By connecting everyone, we hope to unlock even more
opportunities for Ghana.”
Expressing much excitement for the feat achieved, Mark Zuckerberg
added, “Ghana is the fifth country we’ve connected through Internet.org after
Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Colombia.
Thank you to our community for your support and for pushing
to bring Internet.org to more countries as we continue on our path to connect
the whole world.”
Aside being the Ghanaian company with the largest following
on Facebook and the first to offer free Facebook, Airtel also becomes the first
network to offer pages such as Jobberman, Tonaton Wikipedia, Accu Weather and
GhanaWeb for free on internet.org.
